Falafel Tacos

Falafel is traditionally served on pita bread with tomatoes, lettuce, and tahini sauce. Once while my mom, who has celiac disease and must eat gluten free, was visiting, I decided to try it on corn tortillas instead. My husband loved it that way so much that it’s now how we serve them every time!

packaged falafel mix, or
2 cans garbanzo beans, drained
1 small onion finely chopped
1/3c minced parsley
2T minced cilantro
1 garlic clove minced
1t baking powder
1t salt
3/4t cumin
3T water
corn tortillas
lettuce, torn
tomatoes, sliced
tahini sauce (recipe below)

If using mix, prepare according to package directions. If making your own:
Chop beans in food processor.
Add spices to form a coarse paste.
Add water until mixture is gritty but fine.
Brush cookie sheet with olive oil.
Form falafel mix into patties and place on oiled cookie sheet.
Brush oil on top of patties.
Broil patties until nice and brown, approximately 10 minutes.
Flip patties and broil until brown, about another 5 minutes.

Prepare tahini sauce (recipe below).

Heat a bit of olive oil in a skillet on medium-high. Add corn tortillas one at a time. Turn after a few minutes, when edges begin to curl. Cook a few more minutes then drain on a paper towel. Keep fried tortillas in a warm oven.

Serve corn tortillas with falafel, lettuce, tomato, and sauce.

Gluten Free Adaptation:
  • Do not use packaged falafel mix. Follow the directions above to make your own instead.
